Ingredients & Directions

Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients

Yield: 4-6 Burger Buns (4 Servings)
Needed Kitchenware: Mixing bowls, sifter, stand mixer, plastic wrap, kitchen brush, kitchen towel, baking tray, parchment paper, oven
  • 1 tbsp flaxseed meal
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 180 ml or 6.5 oz soy milk
  • 2 tbsp vegan butter, melted or vegetable shortening
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1½ tsp active dry yeast
  • 220 g or 1¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp soy milk
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
Recipe Directions

Directions

  • Mix together the flaxseed meal with the 3 tablespoon of water. Let it sit for few minutes to absorb the water.
  • Warm the soy milk to about 105°F. Mix together the warmed soy milk, melted vegan butter, flax mixture, and sugar. Sprinkle with dry yeast and set aside for 10 minutes.
  • Now add sifted all-purpose flour and salt. Stir until combined and start kneading. I used a stand mixer first and then continued with my hands. Knead until the dough is elastic and forms a ball. It should be a bit sticky still.
  • Put the dough into a greased bowl, cover with the top of the bowl with plastic wrap, and keep in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours to double in volume.
  • Divide the dough into 4-6 pieces depending on a size you want your buns to be. 6 buns will yield buns around 3 inches in diameter while 4 buns will yield buns around 4 inches in diameter. Again let it rest on a lined baking tray for 10 minutes. And now form your future burger buns. Cover with plastic wrap again and let the buns double in volume, approximately for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 380°F.
  • Brush each dough ball with plant milk and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and cover the buns with a kitchen towel. This will protect them from drying out. Let the buns to cool down under the towel for 15 minutes before using.
Notes

You can substitute the soy milk for your favorite plant-based milk, but try using a milk that has a similar fat content to soy milk.
