It's easy to make American ranch dressing from scratch with this recipe! Using just a few ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, you can make this dressing in a couple minutes easily.

Needed Kitchenware: Mixing bowl, whisk
  • 2 tbsp vegan mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp dill weed
  • 1 tsp onion powder or granules
  • 2 tbsp water
Recipe Directions


  • Add all the ingredients into a small bowl and whisk to blend. Serve immediately and enjoy!

You can make this in bulk and store in refridgerator for up to 3 weeks. The dressing might get thicker when it is stored, add water if you wish it to be thinner.

What is American Ranch?

I am not sure I can answer what ranch is supposed to be. I've lived in the Southeast USA for over 2 decades, traveled all over, and I tried ranch everywhere. I actually used to hate it! However it grew on me and then I loved it on everything, especially potatoes and salads.

It's hard to pinpoint what exactly ranch dressing is SUPPOSED to be, but for many, it reminds them of a creamy-based dressing features onions, dill weed, and sometimes a sour taste. This sour taste comes from buttermilk, relish, or sometimes even vinegar.

What makes this recipe different?

I'm a fan of simplicity in the kitchen. I like making things in with the least amount of dishes and focusing on core ingredients.

This recipe focuses on a few ingredients, the core of what ranch dressing is to me - mayonnaise, onion, and dill weed. That's it and to me, it's the perfect ranch dressing that just so happens to be simple!

What ingredients should I use?

The dill weed can be dried or fresh in the same amount. I used dried in this recipe.

The only dried onion I had on-hand was granulated, which is bigger in size than onion powder, but either work just fine!

And the best mayonnaise you should use would the mayonnaise that YOU enjoy the most. The Follow Your Heart mayonnaise I used here is just what I had on-hand and that I enjoy. This so happened to be reduced in fat which is okay, but the regular is great too. Keep in mind the nutrition facts are based off the original mayonnaise, not the reduced fat. The flavor is a little sour and a little fatty which is perfect for our ranch recipe.
